Tonmoy Khan: EVERYTHING
Opening Saturday, January 14th | 6-9 pm
On view through March 4th, 2023
Tierra del Sol Gallery presents Tonmoy Khan: Everything, Khan’s first solo exhibition. Everything embodies Khan’s feelings, his practice and his commitment to making visual language. He uses various media to illustrate his flora and fauna inspired images, including pencil, oil pastels and markers, the combination of these creates vibrant color, texture and depth. His work tells important stories of how he sees and interprets the world around him.
Khan immigrated from Bangladesh in 2011 and joined Tierra’s Studio Art Program in 2019. Khan uses tape to delineate rich geometric watercolor patterns that frame subjects including elaborately potted plants and other still life. Everything also includes surreal imagery depicting hands, flowers, insects, Pokemon and everything in between. Khan implores what he calls his “Secret Imagination” to work through both the stress of living so far from home and the pleasure in his deep connections to his friends, family and ideas that are often expressed in his surrealist works.
Please join us and the artist in celebration of this exciting body of work,
January 14, 6-9pm at the gallery in Chinatown, Los Angeles.
Everyone is welcome!
Ericka Lopez and Tierra del Sol invite you to please touch. The tactile nature of Ericka’s artwork is a fundamental aspect of her own exploration and expertise of materials. Ericka is blind and works entirely by feeling, she wants people to engage with her work in the same way she does.
Visit the gallery Wednesday-Saturday, noon-6pm to gently feel all of the objects in Continuous Touch to experience textures and shapes that connect to Ericka’s world.
Sarit Halo: It’s a Colorful World
Opening Celebration: Saturday, July 8 | 6-9 pm
On view through September 2 at Tierra del Sol Gallery
Tierra del Sol Gallery is excited to present Sarit Halo: It’s a Colorful World, the artist’s debut solo exhibition. Halo merges worlds of memory and imagination in colorful mixed media portraits, interiors and landscapes. To create these playful yet serene works, Halo draws inspiration from source materials, searching for patterns and poses that she makes her own by adding elements from her dreams, faces from her community and distant villages from stories of her family’s life as Persian Jewish immigrants to the US. Halo’s figurative lens verges on abstraction while focusing on her relationship to her subjects, she wants her art to remind the viewer of interactions and moments with their own family.
It’s a Colorful World opens July 8 and runs through September 2, 2023. Join us in celebrating Halo’s extensive body of work in her first solo show on July 8, 6-8pm.
September 9 – October 28, 2023
Tierra del Sol Gallery is proud to present Space is the Place, a group exhibition curated by Los Angeles-based artist Alison Saar. This is Saar’s first guest curator project with the gallery, and she has selected works by 19 artists from the Sunland and Upland studios.
Space is the Place is an iconic, Afrofuturist film and album by legendary Sun Ra. Saar’s work, while grounded in history, leans toward the cosmic and ethereal to investigate through lines of identity and place. She is influenced by Sun Ra’s music and celestial imagery, noting his defining quip “I dared to knock at the door of the cosmos.” She uses that vision as a curatorial portal for this exhibition and in her encounters with Tierra artists.
Saar is a multi-media artist who uses whatever tools and materials she needs to build her visual language. Similarly, for this exhibition, she brings into conversation a diverse selection of vibrantly colored paintings, drawings, tapestry, sculptures and assemblages that focus on galactic and earthly landscapes, as well as strong figures and structures that speak to dimensionality and movement. The otherworldliness of nearly 50 thematic works by 19 artists feels like vibing with something greater than the combination of artists, intentions and materials. Together these works are an experience with the speculative, an immersive journey through time and space where the perspective is as much about a willingness to be in the fullness of the moment as an aesthetic point of view. (Continued)
The journey is symbolic for Tierra del Sol Gallery, as Alison Saar’s Space in the Place is the last exhibition in the Chinatown gallery. The new location on Santa Monica Boulevard is an amalgamation of history, movement and visual theatre. Space in the Place expands Tierra’s geographic and demographic terrain and highlights the organization vision and momentum to recognize that regardless of disability or ability, all people can live lives of meaning and creativity to contribute to the greater good.
Space in the Place is on view September 9 – October 28, 2023. Please join us for an opening celebration on Saturday, September 9, from 6-9 pm.
