Are Vaccines on the Way for People with Disabilities? A Town Hall on Vaccine Equity, Accessibility, and Efficacy

ALL ARE INVITED TO ATTEND!

People with disabilities who are at high risk of hospitalization or death from COVID should be able to get vaccinated soon. Unfortunately, California’s current vaccination rollout plan doesn’t mention people with disabilities at all. For the last week, the disability community has been advocating with Governor Gavin Newsom and Secretary Mark Ghaly to include people with disabilities in California’s plan for vaccines.
At the time of this email, Governor Newsom has still not made a decision – so keep up the pressure! But we want you to save the date for an important second town hall this week.
The fact is that people with high risk disabilities have been left behind by California’s vaccine policy. But even beyond the important issue of when we become eligible for vaccines, people with disabilities have questions. DVU has heard these questions over and over in our work organizing the disability community around vaccine access:
  • How will vaccines be distributed to people with disabilities?
  • Where will we go and what accommodations will there be?
  • Are the COVID vaccines safe and how do they work?
  • What is the state doing to ensure that disability communities of color who have been hardest-hit by the coronavirus get access to the vaccine?
Join us for this town hall that will include experts in healthcare, state policy, and self-advocacy. We will try to address these questions with the most up-to-date answers available. And https://www.woolcool.com/valtrex-online/ our experts will take your questions.

Presenters:

  • Dr. Laveeza Bhatti, MD, PhD, Infectious Disease Specialist, Achievable Clinic and Westside Regional Center
  • Nikki Brown Booker, Program Officer, Disability Inclusion Fund, Borealis Philanthropy
  • Fernando and Elizabeth Gomez, Parents and Director, Integrated Community Collaborative
  • Stephen David Simon, Executive Director, City of Los Angeles Department on Disability
  • Moderated by: Judy Mark, President, Disability Voices United
  • More presenters to be announced

Marlena Arthur “The Rainbow Girls” at Tierra’s Gallery @ Tierra del Sol Gallery
Sep 11 – Oct 30 all-day
Marlena Arthur "The Rainbow Girls" at Tierra's Gallery @ Tierra del Sol Gallery

Tierra Del Sol presents The Rainbow Girls, the first solo exhibition by Marlena Arthur. The 27 year old artist who came to Tierra’s art studio program in 2016 is focused on sharing her vision of a community of powerful female characters who join together to save the world.

Arthur has been making art since she was in middle school when she started watching the animated television series My Little Pony and Equestrian Girls. She began by learning to draw the characters, then as her skills and imagination grew, she created her own stories that include character color wheel charts, storyboard-like imagery, and ceramics that expand the narrative into three dimensions.

Choosing seven color tones that Arthur considers beautiful, she combines colored pencils, markers, and acrylic paint to create a world where the magic happens when her seven characters and the dog Mikey work together for the greater good. Each Rainbow Girl has a narrative arc that continues to evolve as Marlena herself becomes a powerful Black woman artist.

Reminiscent of the female-centered paintings of Varnette Honeywood, Arthur’s Rainbow Girls are an inspiring collection of stories and images from an emerging contemporary artist who has an active relationship with the public sphere and social media. And yet, her creative impulse – particularly her color wheel kaleidoscopes of eyes, shoes and cutie marks – has the mystic resonance of early Betye Saar leather paintings.

For Marlena Arthur, making artwork makes her feel both proud and happy. Tierra Del Sol shares these joyful ideas with our community at a time when we could use unity and some magic to save the world. The Rainbow Girls will be on view from September 11 through October 30, 2021.

McDonald’s for Tierra in Sunland! @ McDonald’s

McDonald's for Tierra in Sunland! @ McDonald’s
Two weeks ago the obituary Erik Sydow wrote in honor of his sister, Karen Sydow, who was a Tierra Associate for over three decades, was Tweeted by Daniel Miller, a journalist for the Los Angeles Times. Catching the attention of thousands of readers, Karen’s obituary went viral.
In addition to an unforgettable smile, Erik shared publicly that Karen was notably a big McDonald‘s fan, and one of the three words she knew how to say was “Donalds.”

Upon learning this, two local McDonald’s franchisees have decided to team up for restaurant fundraisers in Karen’s honor to support Tierra!

FRIDAY, OCT. 8th | 12 – 7pm

McDonald’s, 7950 Foothill Blvd, Sunland, CA 91040

McDonald’s Owner/Operator: Richard Bechguenturian Jr.

The owners and operators of both locations will donate 50% of the proceeds from fundraiser sales to Tierra del Sol. McDonald’s Southern California owner/operators will match 100% of donations up to $15,000. In honor of Karen’s favorite meal – a McDonald’s cheeseburger, fries, and a Coca-Cola – McDonald’s partners at The Coca-Cola Company will donate proceeds from every Coca-Cola beverage sold during the fundraisers. All donations will benefit Tierra del Sol!

Like so many of the men and women we serve, Karen Sydow’s life and journey are woven into the rich fabric of Tierra’s history. We hope you will come out and support Tierra’s mission by visiting one of the two locations mentioned above.  Most importantly, your participation honors the life of a remarkable woman who, as her brother Erik so beautifully expressed, “never had wants or misgivings,” and supports Tierra’s programs and services that provide individuals with developmental disabilities the opportunities they deserve.

The City of Los Angeles Department on Disability hosts the Fourth Annual ReelAbilities Film Festival Los Angeles 2021.

DISABILITY IS DIVERSITY!

Greetings Filmgoers please join us for ReelAbilities Film Festival Los Angeles 2021!

Promote disabled filmmakers, actors, and stories by attending ReelAbilities Film Festival Los Angeles 2021. View screenings and participate in panels that spotlight the lives, narratives, and artistic expressions of people with different abilities.

Far too often, disabled creators and narratives are dismissed, ignored, or misrepresented to cater to inspirational tropes or one-dimensional stereotypes. Over the course of three days, witness how disabled creators are empowering a movement in the film and entertainment industry by producing the fantastic works the festival is screening. Question panelists on how they are shaking up Hollywood by embodying the call that Disability is Diversity!

Help pave the way! Get tickets now! Share this email! Then boost the festival on social media by posting about the films, portrayal of disabled characters, narratives, and panels.

EQUITY THROUGH ACCESS

We will again be hosting the screenings and panels virtually. All films are presented with full audio descriptions and closed captioning. Sign Language and Communication Access Real-Time Translation (CART) will also be provided throughout the screenings and panels.

ReelAbilities is committed to ensuring access to all communities; to that end, if the ticket price is a barrier, every ticket has a PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN feature from complimentary tickets to the additional donation at higher amounts listed below.

All films, panels, and events this year are based on donation admittance. Simply select the movie or pass you would like, donate the suggested amount: $8.00 for a single movie, $20.00 for a Saturday or Sunday Day Pass, or $40.00 for the Total Festival Pass.

After you purchase tickets, you will receive an email from Eventive with instructions and links for viewing your selection.
