McDonald's for Tierra in Sunland! @ McDonald’s
Two weeks ago the obituary Erik Sydow wrote in honor of his sister, Karen Sydow, who was a Tierra Associate for over three decades, was Tweeted by Daniel Miller, a journalist for the Los Angeles Times. Catching the attention of thousands of readers, Karen’s obituary went viral.
In addition to an unforgettable smile, Erik shared publicly that Karen was notably a big McDonald‘s fan, and one of the three words she knew how to say was “Donalds.”

Upon learning this, two local McDonald’s franchisees have decided to team up for restaurant fundraisers in Karen’s honor to support Tierra!

FRIDAY, OCT. 8th | 12 – 7pm

McDonald’s, 7950 Foothill Blvd, Sunland, CA 91040

McDonald’s Owner/Operator: Richard Bechguenturian Jr.

The owners and operators of both locations will donate 50% of the proceeds from fundraiser sales to Tierra del Sol. McDonald’s Southern California owner/operators will match 100% of donations up to $15,000. In honor of Karen’s favorite meal – a McDonald’s cheeseburger, fries, and a Coca-Cola – McDonald’s partners at The Coca-Cola Company will donate proceeds from every Coca-Cola beverage sold during the fundraisers. All donations will benefit Tierra del Sol!

Like so many of the men and women we serve, Karen Sydow’s life and journey are woven into the rich fabric of Tierra’s history. We hope you will come out and support Tierra’s mission by visiting one of the two locations mentioned above.  Most importantly, your participation honors the life of a remarkable woman who, as her brother Erik so beautifully expressed, “never had wants or misgivings,” and supports Tierra’s programs and services that provide individuals with developmental disabilities the opportunities they deserve.

Tierra del Sol Gallery presents our first ever zine show, Zines del Sol. Join us for the collaborative exhibition and festivities celebrating word and image by artists working with the Studios of Tierra del Sol, which is a not-for-profit founded in 1971. We champion inclusion and value for all individuals with disabilities through creative pathways to employment, education, and the arts.

Open from November 6th to December 23rd, 2021, this is the perfect destination for uniquely crafted holiday gifts. This includes the debut of our exciting new Tierra del Sol book publication of collaborative poetry featuring original poems and artwork dreamed into reality from Tierra’s online poetry workshops over the past year. Also, Wendy Yao, owner of Ooga Booga in Los Angeles, is juror of our t-shirt and tote bag contest so you can leave the gallery wearing one of the award-winning designs created by Tierra artists.

We invite you to join us both virtually and in-person as we festively re-emerge and reconnect:

After over a year of creating from home studios and working in new online communities, Tierra artists have come forth with an explosion of passion and an invigorated zest for making art. By delving deeper into their own interior landscapes, original writings and words are woven into poetry, characters stitched into dolls, images conjured for divination, and intergalactic friendships forged. Whether on paper, thread, paint, or clay, these artists have accessed new dimensions of their creative practices and brought imaginative ideas into fruition.

Tierra del Sol Gallery presents Tonmoy Khan: Everything - Running January 14th - March 4th @ Tierra del Sol Gallery

Tonmoy Khan: EVERYTHING
Opening Saturday, January 14th | 6-9 pm
On view through March 4th, 2023

Tierra del Sol Gallery presents Tonmoy Khan: Everything, Khan’s first solo exhibition. Everything embodies Khan’s feelings, his practice and his commitment to making visual language. He uses various media to illustrate his flora and fauna inspired images, including pencil, oil pastels and markers, the combination of these creates vibrant color, texture and depth. His work tells important stories of how he sees and interprets the world around him.

Khan immigrated from Bangladesh in 2011 and joined Tierra’s Studio Art Program in 2019. Khan uses tape to delineate rich geometric watercolor patterns that frame subjects including elaborately potted plants and other still life. Everything also includes surreal imagery depicting hands, flowers, insects, Pokemon and everything in between. Khan implores what he calls his “Secret Imagination” to work through both the stress of living so far from home and the pleasure in his deep connections to his friends, family and ideas that are often expressed in his surrealist works.

Please join us and the artist in celebration of this exciting body of work,
January 14, 6-9pm at the gallery in Chinatown, Los Angeles.
Everyone is welcome!

Ericka Lopez: Continuous Touch Curated by jill moniz | on view thru April 29

Ericka Lopez and Tierra del Sol invite you to please touch. The tactile nature of Ericka’s artwork is a fundamental aspect of her own exploration and expertise of materials. Ericka is blind and works entirely by feeling, she wants people to engage with her work in the same way she does.

Visit the gallery Wednesday-Saturday, noon-6pm to gently feel all of the objects in Continuous Touch to experience textures and shapes that connect to Ericka’s world.
