Artist Walkthrough: Sunday, August 18th, 1 – 2:30 PM
Exhibition dates: July 27 – September 8, 2019
Evan Hynes has created a language of storytelling that is highly visible in Rebel Alliance, his first solo show at Tierra del Sol Gallery. Join us Sunday, August 18th, as he walks through the concepts, stories, and choices he’s made for this body of work.
Evan Hynes (b. 1990) is an artist working in the realm of drawing and storytelling. He studied Art History and English at Mt. San Antonio College and has been making drawings and art since high school. With his knowledge of Art History and cinema Evan has created a language of storytelling, all his own which often includes his love of dark comedy. His use of appropriation allows the viewer to connect with his work on an immediate level but once you read the text and titles a more complex narrative unfolds. Evan uses a mixture of graphite, pens, illustration markers and colored pencils for a controlled color saturation that allows multilayers to be seen. He’s been part of the Tierra del Sol arts program for seven years and has participated in a number of group exhibitions as well as curated for First Street Gallery in Claremont, CA. Evan was born in West Covina and currently lives in East Covina, CA.

Artist Hugo Rocha gives his audience a view into another world with his unique vision of interiors, patterns, and people. He is inspired by telenovelas, turning cinematic stills into brightly colored folkloric compositions.
Often working to soundtracks, and singing as he conceives his interiors, Rocha builds rhythm and density through colors, patterns and line work. This pictorial immediacy engages the viewer with Rocha’s intimate inner world that transforms sound and space into environments and characters, creating scenes from the mundane to the extraordinary.
Rocha, who has been working with the progressive studios of Tierra del Sol in Los Angeles since 2007, creates artwork that is highly narrative and uses design elements similar to the traditions of important outsider artists. The vernacular of bold colors, simplified figures, and abstracted forms situate Rocha’s work in conversation with art legends including William H Johnson and Martin Ramirez.
Tierra del Sol Gallery is pleased to be presenting Hugo Rocha’s first solo show opening September 14, 2019. Rocha has previously exhibited in group shows in New York and Los Angeles.

Helen Rae, and the Artists of Tierra del Sol, bring their unique vision to the Claremont Museum of Art!
Thirty years ago, a group of visionary artists from Tierra del Sol opened the doors of the First Street Gallery Art Center in Claremont. Since then, Tierra, and its hundreds of trailblazing artists, have been in the vanguard, forging professional pathways, while advancing the cause of inclusivity in the art world.
The Claremont Museum of Art exhibition Vanguard: Origins of Tierra del Sol Arts in Claremont featuring Helen Rae, co-curated by Rebecca Hamm and Paige Wery, represents 15 artists from the Claremont years whose remarkable creative expressions have influenced and enriched contemporary art in Southern California and beyond.
Helen Rae’s drawings will be featured in the Museum’s main gallery, while the atrium will feature works in various media by Anthony Barnes, John Boyer, Jose Del Rio, Mary Lou Dimsdale, Leon Fuller, Michael LeVell, Jackie Marsh, John Maull, Dru McKenzie, John Peterson, Hugo Rocha, Vicente Siso, Isabel Vartanian and Joe Zaldivar, all of whom work or have worked with the Tierra del Sol studios.

Tierra’s Gallery presents the solo exhibition of artist, John Maull, a Los Angeles County native who has participated in Tierra’s progressive studios since 2005. Maull’s expressive mixed media works are influenced by his personal and cultural histories, as well as his dedicated perusal of books and magazines. His impressionistic renderings demonstrate his passion for building visual literacy by investigating imagery and experimenting with texture and form.

Tierra Del Sol presents The Rainbow Girls, the first solo exhibition by Marlena Arthur. The 27 year old artist who came to Tierra’s art studio program in 2016 is focused on sharing her vision of a community of powerful female characters who join together to save the world.
Arthur has been making art since she was in middle school when she started watching the animated television series My Little Pony and Equestrian Girls. She began by learning to draw the characters, then as her skills and imagination grew, she created her own stories that include character color wheel charts, storyboard-like imagery, and ceramics that expand the narrative into three dimensions.
Choosing seven color tones that Arthur considers beautiful, she combines colored pencils, markers, and acrylic paint to create a world where the magic happens when her seven characters and the dog Mikey work together for the greater good. Each Rainbow Girl has a narrative arc that continues to evolve as Marlena herself becomes a powerful Black woman artist.
Reminiscent of the female-centered paintings of Varnette Honeywood, Arthur’s Rainbow Girls are an inspiring collection of stories and images from an emerging contemporary artist who has an active relationship with the public sphere and social media. And yet, her creative impulse – particularly her color wheel kaleidoscopes of eyes, shoes and cutie marks – has the mystic resonance of early Betye Saar leather paintings.
For Marlena Arthur, making artwork makes her feel both proud and happy. Tierra Del Sol shares these joyful ideas with our community at a time when we could use unity and some magic to save the world. The Rainbow Girls will be on view from September 11 through October 30, 2021.
